Qatar bans beer sales from 2022 World Cup stadiums

Alcoholic beer will not be sold at the 2022 FIFA World Cup stadiums in Qatar. This decision was announced in the International Football Federation (FIFA) on November 18 – just two days before the start of the tournament. This sudden rule change has led some fans to suspect that the host country is not capable of delivering on previous promises at all.
FIFA officially announced the ban on the sale of beer two days before the start of the World Cup, which will be held for the first time in a conservative Muslim country where drinking in public places is strictly prohibited. “Following discussions between the Qatari authorities and FIFA, a decision has been made to focus the sale of alcoholic beverages at the Fan Fest, other fan outlets and licensed venues, and to ban the sale of beer in the 2022 FIFA World Cup stadiums in Qatar,” the organization said in a statement.
The English Football Supporters Association said the decision raises concerns about Qatar’s ability to deliver on promises made to visiting fans on “accommodation, transport or cultural matters”. For many years, the organizers of the tournament assured that alcohol would be available to all fans.
“Some people like to drink beer at the match, some don’t, the essence of the problem is the very breaking of the promise at the last minute, which indicates a complete lack of communication and understanding between the organizing committee and FIFA regarding the fans,” the association said in a social media statement.
Qatar, the smallest country ever to host a World Cup, is preparing to welcome about 1.2 million fans, more than a third of the entire population of the Arab state.
