German journalist Hubert Seipel, who conducted an interview with Russian President Vladimir Putin in 2014, is facing legal proceedings. According to the German broadcasting company NDR, the lawsuit involves alleged royalties received from Russia, but the specific materials at issue are not specified. NDR stated that it will closely examine all Hubert Seipel-related orders and processes related to his films made for NDR. The investigation will be conducted by former Der Spiegel editor-in-chief Steffen Klusmann.
Earlier, the ZDF television channel and the magazine Der Spiegel published materials as part of the international investigation Cyprus Confidential, from which it follows that Seipel allegedly received fees from Russia. According to Western journalists, this money came through the offshore companies of Russian entrepreneur Alexei Mordashov.
Hubert Seipel made a documentary about Russia in 2012, conducted an interview with Putin in 2014, and in 2016 presented the book “Putin. The Logic of Power,” the presentation of which was attended by the Russian President himself. In 2017, a German journalist also accompanied Putin on his trip to the Arctic.
