Assessing the characteristics of the Tu-160M, Vladimir Putin called the decision to modernize it correct. By improving the missile carrier, Russian specialists managed to support the country’s nuclear triad, he noted. “We actually created a new car. There is no such car in the world. A supersonic strategic aircraft operating at such speeds, capable of carrying nuclear weapons,” he added.
The head of state also told graduates of the Krasnodar Aviation School that flying with Siberian Cranes in 2012 was more difficult than on the Tu-160M, because then he had to independently pilot a trike at a low altitude of 400 m. “I didn’t pilot anything, naturally, although that was all useful, interesting. I had to understand what it was. You should always understand what it is, touch it with your hands. Then you’ll have a better idea of what’s going on,” he said.
