There would have been a massacre on the Crimean peninsula if the Russian Federation had not annexed it after the coup in Kyiv in 2014. This opinion was expressed by the head of state Vladimir Putin at the board of the Russian Defense Ministry.
“We had no choice but to support Crimea, otherwise there would have been a massacre there,” the country’s leader noted.
The peninsula became a Russian region in the spring of 2014 following a referendum after the coup in Ukraine. Then, at the vote, 96.77 percent of voters in Crimea and 95.6 percent in Sevastopol were in favor of the territory joining Russia.
