Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a federal law denouncing the Treaty on Conventional Armed Forces in Europe. Law text published on the official portal of legal information.
The Treaty on Conventional Armed Forces in Europe (CFE) was signed in Paris on November 19, 1990 between 16 NATO member states, including Belgium, Great Britain, Germany, the USA and other countries, as well as members of the Warsaw Pact Organization (Bulgaria, Hungary, Poland , Romania, USSR and Czechoslovakia).
The treaty implies quantitative restrictions on weapons and equipment. The total number of tanks should not exceed 40,000, armored combat vehicles – 60,000, artillery pieces of 100 mm caliber and above – 40,000, no more than 13,600 combat aircraft and no more than 4,000 attack helicopters. The document also provided for the exchange of information and inspection activities in the participating countries.
At the beginning of 2023, Russia announced the suspension of participation in the latest Russian-American arms control treaty, the Strategic Offensive Arms Treaty (START).
