Putin signed a law banning the dismissal of widows of combatants

Russian President Vladimir Putin signed law on providing labor guarantees to the wives of deceased combat veterans. According to the document, the employer will not be able to fire the widow of a combat participant within a year after his death.
The exception will be widows of veterans who remarried or repeatedly committed gross violations of labor discipline. The explanatory note to the bill stated that the adoption of the law would allow “in difficult times” to additionally support loved ones of military personnel participating in a military operation and give them time “to normalize family life in a tragic moment.”
The bill was submitted to the State Duma in September 2023. On April 2, the State Duma adopted the document in the third reading. The next day the law was adopted by the Federation Council. Amendments were made to Part 4 of Art. 261 Labor Code. Previously, the ban on dismissal applied to women with a child under three years of age, as well as single mothers raising a disabled child under the age of 18 or a child under the age of 14.
