Putin refused to change Russia’s nuclear doctrine

Answering a question from Sergei Karaganov, who has long and stubbornly insisted that Russia shake off the dust from its nuclear shield, Vladimir Putin lifted the veil on several military secrets.
Firstly, he does not yet see the need to change Russian nuclear doctrine. It specifies two reasons for Russia’s use of nuclear weapons: a nuclear attack on us and a threat to the existence of our state. “Do we need to change this? What for? Everything can be changed. I just don’t see the need for this,” the president said.
According to him, there is no situation in which today something would threaten Russian statehood and the existence of the Russian state. “I think no person in his right mind and clear memory would think of using nuclear weapons against Russia,” Putin concluded.
In response to the proposal to demonstrate the resumption of nuclear tests, Putin recalled the history of the issue. Russia and the United States once signed an agreement banning such tests. The only difference is that in Russia the State Duma ratified this agreement, but the US Congress did not. According to the president, he is not ready to say whether nuclear tests should be resumed or not. But what Russia is ready for is to behave in a mirror manner towards the United States. In other words, if the United States resumes nuclear testing, then Russia will have the right to do the same. True, for this the State Duma will have to revoke ratification. And, probably, this will not be the case if necessary. “If we do this, it will be quite enough,” the president noted.
Putin also said that Russia has almost completed testing the unlimited-range cruise missile with the Burevestnik nuclear power plant. And this is also a sensation that is unlikely to please the West. “The last successful test of the Burevestnik, a global-range cruise missile with a nuclear propulsion system, has been carried out.” Putin first announced the development of this weapon in March 2018. Many then called it a fantasy, but now, after Putin’s words about the completion of the tests, all questions have disappeared. The Sarmat heavy strategic missile is also on its way.
