President Vladimir Putin signed decree, which recreates the Moscow and Leningrad military districts instead of the Western Military District. The president also included the DPR, LPR, Zaporozhye and Kherson regions in the Southern Military District. The decree on the new military-administrative division of Russia will come into force on March 1, 2024.
The Moscow Military District included Belgorod, Bryansk, Vladimir, Voronezh, Ivanovo, Kaluga, Kostroma, Kursk, Lipetsk, Moscow, Nizhny Novgorod, Oryol, Ryazan, Smolensk, Tambov, Tver, Tula and Yaroslavl regions, as well as Moscow.
The Leningrad Military District includes the republics of Karelia and Komi, Arkhangelsk, Vologda, Kaliningrad, Leningrad, Murmansk, Novgorod, Pskov regions, St. Petersburg, as well as the Nenets Autonomous District.
The Leningrad and Moscow military districts were disbanded in 2010. The Western Military District was created on their basis. In December 2022, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu spoke for the restoration of the Moscow and Leningrad military districts.
