Russian President Vladimir Putin has proposed making psychological rehabilitation mandatory for military personnel returning from a combat zone. According to him, there is “nothing wrong with seeking help from a psychologist.”
“We could make it mandatory. A man has returned from a combat zone, he is collecting certificates and something else, and let everyone go through work with psychologists. It seems to me that the Defenders of the Fatherland Foundation is organizing it. Yes, this is a large amount of work, but it will not be so that someone feels the need, applies and is embarrassed, but no, everyone passes,” Mr. Putin said during a conversation with students participating in hostilities in Ukraine.
The head of state drew attention to the fact that, according to international practice, about 50% of those who have gone through combat operations need to work with a psychologist, but in Russia only 20% turn to them. “Many people don’t turn to psychologists because they believe that this is a manifestation of some kind of character weakness or something else. These are simply features of the central nervous system of each person. There is nothing so unusual here, specialists are just setting up, restoring a person, and so on,” he added.
In 2023, Vladimir Putin instructed improve the system of providing psychological assistance, paying special attention to supporting military personnel suffering from the effects of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Improving systems for providing psychological assistance should include the development of the necessary methodological base, as well as the organization of retraining and advanced training of psychologists. According to the government of the Russian Federation, in most regions of the country professional retraining and additional training of psychologists to work with military personnel returning from the Northern Military District zone have already begun.
