President Vladimir Putin promised to support a bill to limit the use of foreign words in public space, including in advertising and the media. Chairman of the State Duma Committee on Culture Elena Yampolskaya addressed him with such a request at a plenary session of the St. Petersburg International Cultural Forum.
“Of course, we will support your bill. I just don’t know the details, but we’ll see, of course,” said Vladimir Putin, responding to Mrs. Yampolskaya (quoted by TASS).
The bill was submitted to the State Duma in October by nine deputies from the United Russia faction, including the heads of the committees on culture, economic policy, construction and housing and communal services, as well as information policy Elena Yampolskaya, Maxim Topilin, Sergei Pakhomov and Alexander Khinshtein.
The authors of the initiative insist on the mandatory use of the Russian language in “commercial designations” and on limiting the use of foreign words in “information for public information to consumers” unless we are talking about trademarks. Now the law allows the use of foreign words if they are provided with footnotes in Russian of the same size.
