PMC “Wagner” from a legal point of view does not exist. About it told Russian President Vladimir Putin in an interview with Kommersant special correspondent Andrei Kolesnikov after the plenary session of the Future Technologies Forum.
“Well, PMC Wagner doesn’t exist! We don’t have a law on private military organizations! It just doesn’t exist! <...> There is no such entity. There is a group, but it does not legally exist,” Putin said, noting that the issue of legalizing PMCs should be discussed in the State Duma.
The meeting on June 29 in the Kremlin was attended by 35 fighters of the Wagner PMC. According to Putin, he assessed the actions of military personnel on the battlefield and during the attempted military mutiny on June 24, and also offered them alternatives for further service. One option was to continue serving under their direct commander, call sign Seda, under whom the fighters had served for the past 16 months.
About Putin’s meeting with PMC fighters became known 10 July. According to the press secretary of the President of Russia Dmitry Peskov, the meeting lasted about three hours. He did not provide any additional details.
On the night of June 24, PMC Wagner, led by Yevgeny Prigozhin, attempted an armed rebellion in Russia. As the founder of the PMC previously stated, the fighters had 200 km to go to Moscow. After negotiations with the President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko, Prigozhin decided to stop the movement to the capital and return to the rear camps of PMCs. The press secretary of the President of the Russian Federation, Dmitry Peskov, specified that the criminal case initiated against Prigozhin would be terminated, and he himself “would go to Belarus.”
