Putin noted the need to improve the nuclear triad

Russia will maintain and improve the combat readiness of its nuclear triad, this is the basis of the balance of power in the world, transmits TASS with reference to President Vladimir Putin.

“We will continue to maintain and improve the combat readiness of the nuclear triad – this is the main guarantee of preserving our sovereignty and territorial integrity, strategic parity and the overall balance of power in the world,” the president said.

According to him, this year the level of modern weapons in the strategic nuclear forces has already exceeded 91%, and the re-equipment of the regiments of the Strategic Missile Forces (RVSN) with the Avangard hypersonic warhead is also underway.

The nuclear triad is the strategic armed forces of a state equipped with nuclear weapons, including three components: strategic aviation, intercontinental ballistic missiles, and nuclear submarine missile carriers. The division of the state’s strategic nuclear charges among several branches of the strategic armed forces ensures that the entire combat-ready arsenal of nuclear weapons cannot be destroyed in the event of a surprise attack by the enemy.

According to the provisions of the military doctrine, the Russian side can use nuclear weapons if reliable information is received about the launch of ballistic missiles attacking the territory of Russia, if nuclear weapons or other types of weapons of mass destruction are used on the territory of the country.

Last year, Putin called the nuclear triad a key guarantee of the country’s security. At the same time, he noted that the use of nuclear weapons is “an extreme, exceptional measure to ensure national security.”
