Putin launched the launch of the Yakutia icebreaker

Russian President Vladimir Putin took part via videoconference in the ceremony of launching the Yakutia icebreaker and raising the national flag on the Ural icebreaker. About it informs Kremlin press office.
The head of state noted that the Ural will start operating as early as December this year, and the Yakutia will be handed over to the Russian fleet at the end of 2024. Another Chukotka icebreaker of the same series will be commissioned in 2026, the president specified.
“Ships of such a high ice class are of strategic importance for us. They are needed to study and develop the Arctic, to ensure safe, sustainable navigation in this region, to increase traffic along the Northern Sea Route,” Putin explained.
The President emphasized that Russia would build up the capabilities of its nuclear icebreaker fleet with the involvement of domestic technologies and equipment.
Yakutia is one of the new universal nuclear-powered icebreakers of project 22220, which are being built by order of Rosatom and are the largest and most powerful in the world. Its length is 170 m, the icebreaker has two nuclear reactors, main electric motors and a forward main switchboard. It is noted that the completion of the ship will be already on the water.
In addition, today Putin planned negotiations with Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel Bermudez. The Kremlin press service reported that the leaders of the two countries plan to discuss cooperation in the political, trade, economic, cultural and humanitarian spheres. The presidents will also touch on key topics on the international agenda.
