Russian President Vladimir Putin allowed the construction of the nuclear icebreaker Leningrad to begin, reports Interfax from the ceremony of laying down the vessel at the Baltic Shipyard shipyard in St. Petersburg.
The length of the icebreaker will be 173.3 m, width – 34 m, total height – 52 m. The crew will be 52 people.
The President said that Leningrad will become the fifth ship of the Project 22220 series. According to him, the ship will, in particular, work along the Northern Sea Route and participate in Arctic development programs. In 2025, another ship of the same class will be laid down, it will be named “Stalingrad,” Vladimir Putin added.
The event was attended by the general director of the Rosatom state corporation Alexey Likhachev, the head of VTB Andrey Kostin, the speaker of the Federation Council Valentina Matvienko and the governor of St. Petersburg Alexander Beglov.
