Russian President Vladimir Putin instructed Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin to form a government commission to eliminate the consequences of a flood in the Kherson region caused by the destruction of the Kakhovskaya hydroelectric power station, according to site Kremlin.
The dam and buildings of the Kakhovskaya hydroelectric power station were destroyed on June 6, as a result of which water from the Kakhovka reservoir flooded the cities of Alyoshki, Novaya Kakhovka, and Golaya Pristan. In the Ukrainian territories, due to the destruction of the hydroelectric power station, problems began with drinking water and the supply of irrigation systems.
According to the Acting Governor of the Kherson region Vladimir Saldo, 5,000 people were evacuated from Russian-controlled territories. Seven people were killed in the flood.
The Kremlin blames Ukraine for the incident and says that in this way the Ukrainian side wanted to deprive Crimea of water supply. The Ukrainian authorities believe that Russia, which controlled the hydroelectric power station, blew up the dam in order to complicate the counteroffensive of the Ukrainian armed forces. Russia took control of the Kakhovskaya HPP in March 2022.
