President Vladimir Putin instructed the Ministry of Sports and the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) to develop proposals for the participation of Russian athletes in the 2024 Olympics in Paris. Presidential aide Igor Levitin announced this at the meeting “Successes in the development of the sphere of physical culture and sports,” a RIA Novosti correspondent reports.
“It is necessary to decide for each federation on what conditions they will participate in the Olympic Games and what declarations they will require for participation in the Games,” said Igor Levitin.
The Paris Olympics will take place from July 26 to August 11, 2024. On March 28, 2023, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) recommended that Russian and Belarusian athletes be allowed to participate in international competitions in a neutral status. They were prohibited from using national flags, coats of arms and other symbols at competitions.
In December of the same year, Vladimir Putin called the IOC’s decision to admit Russian athletes to international competitions “a complete perversion of the ideas of the Olympic movement.” The President invited athletes from the Russian Federation to carefully analyze the conditions of the IOC before deciding to participate in international tournaments.
