Putin has banned the dismissal of single parents with children under 16 – Kommersant

President Vladimir Putin signed a law banning the dismissal of single parents with children under 16 years of age. Document published on the legal information portal. The law comes into force 10 days after publication.

Previously, it was prohibited to fire workers who were raising children under 14 years of age alone. A draft law raising the age limit in this case to 16 years was introduced in August 2023 by a group of senators and deputies from the Liberal Democratic Party. The authors of the initiative explained that children usually receive general education by the age of 16, so their single parents need additional protection from the state. State Duma accepted law in January.

As Kommersant reported, the Ministry of Labor will update the rules for assigning a single benefit for families with children in order to solve the problem of artificially lowering income through fictitious divorces. In 2022, this phenomenon became widespread in a number of regions of the North Caucasus; in some republics, the number of divorces increased several times.
