The Presidents of Russia and Turkmenistan Vladimir Putin and Serdar Berdimuhamedov had a telephone conversation, during which they confirmed their commitment to further comprehensive development of partnership relations, reported Kremlin press service.

“During the telephone conversation, Vladimir Putin warmly congratulated Serdar Berdimuhamedov on his birthday. The mutual commitment to the further comprehensive development of Russian-Turkmen relations in the spirit of in-depth strategic partnership was confirmed,” the statement said.

In the previously published congratulatory telegram Putin stated Berdimuhamedov’s high contribution to the development of deep strategic partnership relations between Russia and Turkmenistan, and also expressed hope for continued joint work in the interests of ensuring security and stability in Central Asia and the Caspian region.

Earlier in May, Berdimuhamedov, along with six other leaders of the CIS countries, attended celebrations in honor of Victory Day. In August 2022 Putin awarded Order of Merit for the Fatherland, IV degree, from the ex-President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, the father of the current head of state.

Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov announced in February 2022 his intention to relinquish the post he had held since 2007. In early elections that same year, Serdar Berdimuhamedov won with 72.97% of the vote. His father took the position of chairman of the Khalk Maslakhaty Milli Gengesh (upper house of parliament).
