Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree granting Russian citizenship to Semyon Boykov, a descendant of Transbaikal Cossacks living in Australia. He is known under the nickname Aussie Cossack (“Australian Cossack”) on the social network X (ex-Twitter), organized events in support of Russia and clashed with pro-Ukrainian activists.

In December 2022, Semyon Boykov attacked a 72-year-old pensioner at a pro-Ukrainian protest. The pensioner was hospitalized with a head injury. Semyon Boykov, to avoid police persecution, took cover at the Russian embassy. All this time he lived there.

In January 2023 Semyon Boykov spoke with a protest against financial support for Ukraine from Australia ($655 million).

Recently, Semyon Boykov has come to the attention of the media by opposing the referendum on giving voting rights to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in Australia. The referendum in Australia will take place on October 14. In conversation with AFP he commented on the Sydney anti-referendum rally: “Everything the government tries to shove down our throats we should be suspicious of. But there are a lot of doubts.”

Australian Home Affairs Minister James Paterson warned from participating in such rallies and called the protests a “shameless” attempt to promote “stupid and radical ideas.”

In November 2011, at the Cossack circle in Sydney, Semyon Boykov was elected ataman of the Australian embassy village of the Transbaikal Military Cossack Society. However, in 2017, the Council of Atamans removed him from his post. In 2014, the Governor of the Trans-Baikal Territory, Konstantin Ilkovsky, awarded him for strengthening relations between the Trans-Baikal Territory and Australia.
