Russian President Vladimir Putin said. that he does not agree with the opinion that the Prime Minister of Armenia Nikol Pashinyan was “brought” to power by someone in order to later “surrender” Nagorno-Karabakh.
Putin spoke at a meeting of the Valdai international discussion club. Margarita Simonyan, editor of the Rossiya Segodnya media group and RT television channel, asked a question about Pashinyan.
According to Putin, he believes that Pashinyan was chosen by the people of Armenia.
“Yes, you can have different attitudes towards the electoral processes, but this is a fact, so I don’t agree with you here,” he said, also emphasizing that he does not share the opinion about Pashinyan’s intention to “surrender” Nagorno-Karabakh.
The Russian President noted that he maintained contact with Pashinyan both during the conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan in 2020, and during the period of recent events.
“Let’s remember when he came to power, he said that Karabakh is part of the Armenian people. Nobody said this before,” Putin said.
On September 19, 2023, Azerbaijan launched a military operation in Karabakh. A day later, through the mediation of Russian peacekeepers, an agreement on a ceasefire was reached; among the conditions of the truce, in particular, the disarmament of the Armenian formations was outlined.
Subsequently, negotiations took place on the integration of Nagorno-Karabakh into Azerbaijan, while the Azerbaijani authorities arrested most of the leaders of Karabakh.
