Russian President Vladimir Putin signed decreewhich deprives the Northern Fleet of the status of a military district and includes it in the recreated Leningrad Military District.
The Northern Fleet has been given the status of a military district since 2013. Then it included Komi, the Arkhangelsk and Murmansk regions, and the Nenets Autonomous Okrug.
The same presidential decree recreates Moscow Military District, which, like Leningrad, was abolished in 2010. At that time, these two associations were part of the Western Military District, which has been abolished by the current decree. In addition, Vladimir Putin included the DPR, LPR, Zaporozhye and Kherson regions in the Southern Military District. The decree will come into force on March 1.
In December 2022, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu advocated the re-establishment of the Moscow and Leningrad military districts. August 9, 2023 Board of the Ministry of Defense considered this issue and officially approved the decision to create new military districts.
