Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a law denouncing the Treaty on Conventional Armed Forces in Europe (CFE). Document published on the official legal Internet portal.
The CFE Treaty was signed in 1990. The treaty established quotas for the number of battle tanks, armored combat vehicles, artillery, attack helicopters and combat aircraft. Russia suspended participation in July 2007 after NATO refused to ratify an updated version of the treaty.
On May 10, 2023, Vladimir Putin introduced a bill to denounce the CFE Treaty. The explanatory note to it noted that the treaty “is largely outdated and has lost touch with reality,” including due to NATO expansion. May 16 accepted deputies of the State Duma, May 24 – approved in the Federation Council.
