Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a law that establishes September 3 as the day of the end of World War II and the Day of Victory over militaristic Japan. The document was published on the portal of legal information.
Corresponding changes were made to the law “On the Days of Military Glory and Commemorative Dates of Russia”. September 3, which in the law was called the Day of the end of World War II, has now received the official name “Day of victory over militaristic Japan and the end of World War II.”
This wording was chosen to comply with the principles of historical justice, lawmakers say. It is also “one of the measures in response to the unfriendly actions of Japan.”
Recall that the Soviet-Japanese war began on August 9, 1945. On September 2 of the same year, Japan signed the Instrument of Surrender. September 3 is considered the official day of the end of the war.
