Russian President Vladimir Putin sent a congratulatory telegram to the 159th Fighter Aviation Regiment in connection with the assignment of the name “Guards”. Text of the letter published on the Kremlin website.

“This is a high honor and recognition of your special merits, mass heroism and courage, perseverance and courage shown in defending the Fatherland and state interests of Russia,” the telegram says.

Putin also noted the regiment’s achievements during the special operation and expressed confidence that the military will continue to “serve with honor” to Russia.

Head of State appropriated honorary titles “Guards” to the 47th Bomber Aviation Regiment and the 159th Fighter Aviation Regiment on September 27. The titles were awarded with the wording “for mass heroism and courage, fortitude and courage shown by the regiment’s personnel in combat operations to protect the Fatherland and state interests in armed conflicts.” The decrees came into force from the date of signing.

The 159th Fighter Aviation Regiment was formed in 1940 on the basis of the 6th Separate Aviation Squadron and received the name “88th Fighter Aviation Regiment.” During the Great Patriotic War, the regiment took part in the Rostov operation, the liberation of Crimea, the liberation of Belarus, etc. Since 1992, the regiment has been based at the Besovets airfield near Petrozavodsk, it says on the website of the Besovets garrison.
