The President of Russia congratulated the residents of Donbass on the 80th anniversary of liberation from the Nazi invaders, the Kremlin reported.

As Vladimir Putin said, the resources of Donbass were of enormous importance to the enemy.

“To take possession of them was one of Germany’s goals in attacking the Soviet Union,” the president said.

He noted that “the Nazis did everything to retain the Donetsk steppes and force people to work for the military machine of the Third Reich.”

The head of state recalled: “fierce popular resistance” lasted almost 700 days. He also noted the feat of the soldiers of the Great Patriotic War in the liberation of Donbass.

Vladimir Putin said that he was confident that 9 years ago “on these borders, sacred to us,” the example of these soldiers “led their descendants – the Donbass militias, increased their courage and fortitude in a new battle with Nazism.” And also “gave the grandchildren and great-grandchildren of the winners the strength to defend their land, their culture, language, heritage.”
