Putin congratulated Abkhazia and South Ossetia on the anniversary of the recognition of independence

Russian President Vladimir Putin sent congratulatory telegrams to the Presidents of Abkhazia and South Ossetia Aslan Bzhaniya and Alan Gagloev on the occasion of the 15th anniversary of the recognition of the countries’ independence. The documents are published on the Kremlin website.

In a telegram to Gagloev, the Russian leader declaredthat South Ossetia also manages to “successfully develop the institutions of democratic statehood.” According to Putin, relations between the countries are at the level of alliance and integration. He expressed confidence that Russia and South Ossetia would continue to build up bilateral ties in all areas, and wished the citizens of the republic peace, happiness and prosperity.
On the night of August 8, 2008, an armed conflict took place on the territory of South Ossetia. Georgia attacked the capital city of Tskhinvali in order to establish control over the self-proclaimed republic. Dmitry Medvedev, then president of Russia, announced the start of a peacekeeping mission in South Ossetia and the transfer of Russian forces to the conflict zone.

On August 26, Russia recognized the independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia. Also, the independence of the republics is recognized by Venezuela, Syria, Nicaragua and Nauru.
