Putin: before the creation of the Ukrainian SSR, “there was no Ukraine”

Zorkin brought a copy of a 17th-century map compiled under Louis XIV by French cartographers to a meeting with the president. On this map, according to him, there is no Ukraine, but there is the edge of the Commonwealth and the edge of the Cossacks, as well as the kingdom of Russia.
“We know that these lands were part of the Commonwealth, and then asked to be part of the Muscovy … And only then, after the October Revolution, all sorts of quasi-state formations began to form, and the Soviet government created Soviet Ukraine. Before that, there was no Ukraine in the history of mankind,” Putin said in response.
Earlier, on February 21, 2022, three days before the start of the military special operation, Putin stated in circulation to the Russians that modern Ukraine was “entirely and completely” created by the Bolsheviks. The latter, in his assessment, did this in a “very rude” way – at the expense of tearing away from Russia its own historical territories. Later, Joseph Stalin, Putin said, annexed to the USSR and transferred to Ukraine some of the former lands of Poland, Romania and Hungary, and in 1954 Nikita Khrushchev “for some reason gave” Crimea to Ukraine.
In October of the same year, President named Ukraine as an “artificial state” and Russia as its “only real guarantor” of statehood and sovereignty. He also then repeated that he considers Russians and Ukrainians to be one people.
