Russian President Vladimir Putin asked Agriculture Minister Dmitry Patrushev why poultry meat has become more expensive in Russia.

The head of state held on October 25 meeting with members of the government via video conference on preparations for the winter season. Patrushev, together with the governor of the Moscow region Andrei Vorobyov, made a report while on the farm.

“Dmitry Nikolaevich, the fact that you are communicating with us from the chicken coop is great, it enlivens our work, but why has chicken become so expensive? Since the beginning of the year, our poultry meat has increased (in price – Vedomosti) by more than 27%,” Putin said.

The government, the president added, must turn on “well-known mechanisms” in a timely manner, including purchasing meat from Belarus and Kazakhstan. The minister, in turn, noted that work is underway in connection with prices for poultry meat, and producers have already begun to reduce prices.

As Vedomosti previously wrote, broiler carcasses in the wholesale segment in the week from October 16 to October 22, 2023 decreased in price by 2.8% to 210 rubles. for 1 kg. The price fell for the first time since the end of June. Experts previously explained the rise in prices by the “physical shortage of volumes” of meat and the rush demand for it. Other reasons include production problems in certain regions and increased export volumes. On October 16, the FAS reported that chicken producers began to reduce prices, but specific figures were not given at that time.

In August, according to Rosstat, the cost of 1 kg of chicken was 208 rubles, in September – 221 rubles. (22% year-on-year growth). A representative of the Ministry of Agriculture said that last week Patrushev held a meeting with NSP and major producers. He did not name specific companies, but, according to him, during the meeting an agreement was reached to “intensify production and stabilize the cost of this product on the domestic market.”
