Pushilin announced his intention to run for the post of head of the DPR

The interim head of the DPR, Denis Pushilin, announced his intention to nominate his candidacy in the elections for the head of the republic. He stated this on a direct line with the residents of the DPR.
“Yes, I made that decision. [баллотироваться на выборах]. This is my responsibility, and not even from 2018, but from 2014. For all the processes that take place [в республике]I feel an internal responsibility, ”Pushilin said (quote according to RIA Novosti).
Russian President Vladimir Putin appointed Pushilin as acting head of the republic on October 4, 2022. This happened after the region was annexed to Russia on September 30.
Pushilin took over the leadership of the DPR after the death of its first head Alexander Zakharchenko in September 2018. Two months later, in November of the same year, he won the election of the head of the DPR, gaining more than 60% of the vote. 14.28% of voters voted for his closest rival, Roman Khramenkov, deputy of the People’s Council (parliament) of the republic.
In October 2022, Vedomosti, citing a representative of United Russia, wrote that regional branches of the party would be opened in the DPR, LPR, Zaporozhye and Kherson regions, and the organization in the DPR would be headed by Pushilin – at the end of the same month in the party reported on his appointment to the post of head of the regional branch. The acting head of the republic himself became a member of United Russia at the end of 2021.
