The number of victims among civilians in the DPR after the start of the use of cluster munitions by the Armed Forces of Ukraine increased many times over, Denis Pushilin, the acting head of the region, said on the Soloviev Live TV channel.

The authorities expect to find a “non-standard” way to protect civilians, Pushilin added.

August 28 Mayor of Donetsk Aleksey Kulemzin informed about the death of a man during the shelling of the city, two more civilians were injured. In total, the Armed Forces of Ukraine fired 124 shells at the city, including 10 cluster munitions. According to Kulemzin, from 21:00 on August 28 to 09:00 on August 29, 63 shells were fired at Donetsk, including four cluster-type shells.

On August 26, the Russian Investigative Committee announced that the Armed Forces of Ukraine fired upon cluster munitions, the village of Urazovo in the Belgorod region. Six people were injured, and several houses and cars were also damaged.

The White House announced the transfer of cluster munitions to Kyiv in early July. Washington acknowledged the danger of such weapons to the civilian population, noting that Ukraine provided the United States with written guarantees that the ammunition would be used “with caution.” The Pentagon also linked this decision to the shortage of 155-caliber artillery shells in the United States. Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu then said that if cluster munitions were supplied to Ukraine, the Russian military would be forced to use similar weapons against the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
