Recently, a mysterious image appeared on the social networks of the aircraft manufacturer Lockheed Martin, which attracted the attention of many users. It is speculated that this image may be related to the Next-Generation Air Dominance (NGAD) project.
Sixth-generation aircraft must be able to hide from radar, develop high speeds that exceed the speed of anti-aircraft missiles, and operate effectively outside the zone of destruction of anti-aircraft systems. The NGAD project is designed to meet these complex challenges.
Interestingly, NGAD prototypes already exist, and observers managed to spot two objects with unknown flying wing gliders in the area of the secret “Area 51”. According to information from internal sources, three prototypes are participating in the tests.
At the moment, the project is at the stage of choosing a manufacturer, three large companies are participating in the competition: Lockheed Martin, Boeing and Northrop Grumman. The media reports that there are two companies left in the final stage of the competition, but the exact details were not disclosed. The final decision on the choice of manufacturer will be made in 2024.
At the same time, NGAD is not just new aircraft. This is a whole system of advanced technologies, including the development of new engines, weapons (possibly including laser systems), electronic warfare systems, sensors, network ecosystems and combat control systems. The project also plans to acquire a thousand unmanned aerial vehicles with a high degree of autonomy, known as Collaborative Combat Aircraft (CCA).
