Scientists from the University of Massachusetts in the United States have determined that both children and adults are trying to find the good in the characters of villains from movies and cartoons. Detailed study published in the scientific publication Cognition.
Scientists noticed that people regardless of age claimed that the villains deep down are good people. A person tends to believe that the actions of the villains do not correspond to their inner ideals, the real “I”.
Scientists conducted three experiments among 434 children aged four to 12 years and 277 adults. The researchers asked the subjects in detail how they feel about negative and positive characters.
The first study helped scientists understand that children tend to perceive the actions and emotions of negative characters as extremely negative.
In addition, subsequent observations have shown that neither children nor adults believe that the actions of villains reflect their true nature and that the negative characters are actually a little better than they want to seem.
Despite the fact that the participants in the study believed that the villains are actually much kinder, despite their immoral behavior, this belief did not stop the respondents from condemning the negative heroes.
