Psychologists from Tilburg University in the Netherlands found that greedy people have more money, but this does not bring them happiness and they are less satisfied with their lives than ordinary or generous people. The results of the work were published in the American scientific journal Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin. The study involved 2367 people. Respondents filled out special questionnaires to assess the degree of greed and income level. The survey also focused on life satisfaction and demographics.

Researchers have found that greed is associated with hostile behavior and traits of the dark triad (narcissism, psychopathy, and Machiavellianism). Recall that Machiavellianism in psychology is a personality trait described as a combination of manipulativeness, callousness and indifference to morality. Narcissism is a disorder characterized by an egocentric style of behavior with excessive interest in one’s appearance and preoccupation with one’s own needs at the expense of loved ones or others in general. Psychopathy often manifests itself as a combination of heartlessness to others, reduced ability to empathize, lack of remorse for causal evil, deceit and superficiality of emotional reactions. However, greed also has positive aspects. In particular, people with this quality have more money.

In addition to higher incomes in the family, it turned out that greedy people also have more sexual partners. But at the same time, they have fewer children and romantic relationships are much shorter in time than ordinary people. Finally, greed as a psychological quality was associated with lower life satisfaction.

“Greed has some positive and some negative consequences for the individual,” the researchers noted. It may be good for income, but bad for happiness. Maybe greedy people make their partners work harder and make more money.” Alternatively, the researchers suggested that greedy people immediately choose partners with more money in the first place. The third variable, having fewer children, has also been explained. The need to look after children can lead to increased costs, which is unacceptable for greedy people, so they immediately try to avoid such situations.
