Clinical psychologist Ekaterina Alekseeva in an interview with “Gazeta.Ru” said that during adolescence, children pretend to be on an equal footing with adults, trying to imitate bad habits, including profanity, smoking, and even the use of illegal substances. The specialist revealed how parents can understand that their child is addicted to illegal substances.
Initially, parents may not be aware of a child’s drug use, she says, because the behavioral changes are similar to typical adolescent behavior. Alekseeva noted that “wide pupils and cleaved hands” are not relevant in today’s realities, since types of drugs manifest themselves differently in appearance and behavior, and may not appear at all.
The psychologist advises to pay attention to changes in eating behavior, promiscuity in social relationships and an increase in the financial needs of the child. As Alekseeva noted, another sign of use may be the child’s secrecy, the desire to spend more time outside the home, sudden mood swings, and other reasons. She stressed that any drastic changes are a warning sign of possible use.
According to the expert, if parents have such suspicions, they can offer the teenager to voluntarily take a drug test, but the best option would be to contact a psychologist or narcologist. Alekseeva added that they will help to properly build a dialogue with the child without harming the relationship, and also help get rid of a bad habit.
