In Prague, a protest rally “Czech Republic Against Poverty” took place, during which thousands of people took to the streets in the city center to express their dissatisfaction with the country’s authorities. The protesters accuse the centre-right government of ignoring economic problems at home and focusing too much on Ukraine. The rally was organized by the extra-parliamentary party PRO (Právo Respekt Odbornost – “Right Respect Expertise”).
The protesters chanted the slogans “Resign” and “Shame” and carried banners calling for the Czech Republic to withdraw from NATO and for peace talks in Ukraine. The protesters also criticized the government, led by Prime Minister Petr Fiala, for soaring food and energy prices. About 200 police officers were on the scene to prevent clashes with counter-demonstrators waving Ukrainian flags, according to the dpa.
This protest is a continuation of the previous one, which took place a month ago. The Czech Republic has been facing record inflation for more than a year, driven mainly by higher energy prices. The protesters demand that the government take action to combat the growing poverty and economic problems in the country.
