Regular Skif satellites will begin to be manufactured in Russia in 2024, Roscosmos reported. The devices will be part of the orbital group of the same name as part of the Sphere program.
“Sphere” involves providing Russia with satellite Internet and communications. The project is an analogue of Starlink and OneWeb. It is expected that Sphere will include five satellite constellations providing telecom services, and another five for surveillance.
“We have signed a contract for the development and production of the first stage of the constellation consisting of six spacecraft of the Skif medium-orbit broadband Internet access system,” Roscosmos said. TASS.
A preliminary design is currently being developed. Its completion is expected by the end of the year. The satellites should be launched in 2026 and 2027 – two satellites per Soyuz-2.1b launch vehicle.
The first demonstration vehicle “Skif-D” was launched October 22, 2022 on the Soyuz-2.1b launch vehicle from the Vostochny Cosmodrome.
