Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will personally attend the BRICS summit, which will be held in South Africa at the end of August. This was reported in the office of the Prime Minister of India.
“President Ramaphosa invited the Prime Minister to the BRICS Summit to be held in South Africa on 22-24 August 2023 and briefed him on preparations for it. The Prime Minister accepted the invitation and said that he was looking forward to his visit to Johannesburg to participate in the summit,” the message said (cit. according to RIA Novosti).
Earlier, The Economic Times, citing sources informedthat Modi can attend the summit remotely. TASS also reported on this scenario, citing sources. According to the agency, the final decision was to be made closer to the dates of the summit.
The BRICS summit (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) will be held in South Africa from 22 to 24 August. It will be held in person for the first time in three years. According to the plan, the leaders of four states will come to it, and Russian President Vladimir Putin will take part in the summit via video link. Directly at the summit, Moscow will be represented by Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. Earlier, the press service of the President of South Africa reported that Putin’s refusal to attend the summit in person was “by mutual agreement” of the parties.
