President Djukanovic, ruling Montenegro for 32 years, announced his nomination for a new term

Montenegrin President Milo Djukanovic, whose total term of office as president and prime minister of the country is 32 years, announced on Saturday that he was nominating his candidacy for a third presidential term, TASS reports. Djukanovic told reporters about this at a special press conference.
Presidential elections will be held in Montenegro on March 19.
“My candidacy is on the table,” Djukanovic said.
He added that his candidacy is “an expression of responsibility to Montenegro”, and the goal is to win in the first round and maintain enthusiasm, “if it comes to the second round.”
In Montenegro, the head of state is elected by popular vote for a term of 5 years. Djukanovic served as prime minister five times (1991-1998, 2003-2006, 2008-2010, 2012-2016), and was president from 1998 to 2002 and was elected for a second term in 2018. The total period of his tenure in power in the country is 32 years. This politician is approaching the record at the top of Zimbabwe’s leader Robert Mugabe, who led the country for 40 years.
According to the constitution, Montenegro is a parliamentary republic, and the president in it performs mainly representative functions. However, the figure of the head of state is of great importance in the country in the formation of the Cabinet and the nomination of the prime minister. According to the constitution of Montenegro, the president cannot hold this post for more than 2 consecutive terms.
