Potentially dangerous “alien” waves discovered off the coast of Sevastopol

Intense and potentially dangerous standing waves – seiches – can penetrate into the Round Bay in the southern part of Sevastopol. Scientists from the Marine Hydrophysical Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences (MGI RAS) spoke about this; the study was retold “Gazeta.Ru”.
Round Bay is, together with other bays, part of a complex complex that has not yet been fully explored. Scientists have provided data on long-term direct measurements of sea level in this bay for the first time.
During the study, scientists found that intense seiche vibrations – standing waves that occur in closed or partially closed bodies of water – can form in Kruglaya Bay.
The intensity of such oscillations can significantly exceed the intensity of the natural oscillations of a particular bay, which poses a danger to ships and coastal infrastructure.
Scientists plan to create a network of sensors for long-term monitoring of long-wave oscillations in all bays of Sevastopol in order to study wave regimes and assess possible dangers associated with seiches. This will allow you to promptly warn about possible threats and take appropriate security measures.
