“Donald Trump doesn’t really have a philosophy as we understand it in political terms,” Bolton said. “He doesn’t think about political directions when he makes decisions, especially in the area of ​​national security.”

Bolton, who was Trump’s national security adviser from April 2018 to September 2019, also criticized Trump for his foreign policy legacy regarding the alliance, saying in an interview, “He threatened the existence of NATO, and I think that with Trump’s second term, we will almost certainly Let’s leave NATO.”

He also criticized Republicans who have been praising Trump for his foreign policy stances. The former adviser said, “Those who make these claims about what Trump did during his first term don’t really understand how we got to where we got to.”

In an op-ed by Bolton last week, he claims that Trump is “disregarding knowledge” and accuses him of “viewing relations between the United States and foreign countries, especially our adversaries, primarily as personal matters.”

“Foreign leaders, friend or foe, are far more likely to view him as ignorant, inexperienced, boastful, aspiring to be one of the big boys and supremely susceptible to flattery,” Bolton wrote. “These characteristics were a constant source of risk during Trump’s first term and will again be so during his second term.”

Bolton condemned Trump for his decision-making style, saying, “Apart from acting on inadequate information, reflection or discussion, Trump is also helpless even after decisions have been made. When something goes wrong, or when he simply changes his mind afterwards (a common occurrence), he invariably tries to distance himself from his own decision, for fear of negative media coverage or political criticism.”

After being fired in 2019, Bolton published The Room Where It Happened, in which he scathingly criticized Trump’s leadership. Earlier this year, Bolton called Trump’s 2024 presidential bid “poison” for the Republican Party.
