Portuguese Prime Minister António Costa has resigned amid an investigation into his administration’s alleged mismanagement of lithium and hydrogen projects. About it writes Reuters.
Costa announced his decision after a meeting with Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa. He said his conscience was clear but he would no longer run for prime minister.
“The functions of the prime minister are incompatible with suspicions of his honesty, good behavior, and even more so with suspicions of committing any criminal acts,” Costa told reporters.
The agency clarifies that prosecutors named Infrastructure Minister Joao Galamba as an official suspect and detained Costa’s chief of staff. The prime minister said he was “fully willing to cooperate” with the justice system after prosecutors said he was also the subject of an investigation.
On the morning of November 7, at the official residence of the Prime Minister and some government ministries passed searches as part of an investigation related to lithium exploration projects in Montalegre. This is a deal that guaranteed Lusorecursos exploration of the lithium mine in Montalegre, despite the fact that the company is not part of the group with exploration rights.
