Population Studies: Being Overweight Significantly Increases the Risk of Death

The University of Colorado found that the risk of premature death in overweight people is at least 22% higher. Moreover, the risk of death increases with diagnosed obesity. The results of the research scientists published in Population Studies.
From 1988 to 2015, researchers collected and analyzed data from 18,000 people. They all participated in the National Health and Nutrition Survey. It is noted that for more than a quarter of a century, about 4.5 thousand of them died.
The results showed that overweight, which was not at the time of the beginning of the experiment and appeared by the end of it, was in 20% of the participants. Their health profile was significantly worse compared to those who had a stable weight throughout the study period.
“Approximately 1 in 6 deaths in the US are attributable to being overweight or obese,” the researchers concluded.
