Pope Francis calls for ‘reviving the spirit of Helsinki’

Pope Francis, who arrived on Tuesday in Kazakhstan on an apostolic visit, called for the establishment of a universal political dialogue and the revival of the “spirit of Helsinki” to create a stable and peaceful world.
“It’s time to learn not to aggravate enmity and stop strengthening opposing blocs,” the pontiff said, speaking to representatives of the leadership, civil society and the diplomatic corps in Kazakhstan.
According to him, “leaders are needed who at the international level would promote mutual understanding and dialogue between peoples and the revival of the spirit of Helsinki, the desire to strengthen the multipolar world in order to build a more stable and peaceful world in the care of new generations.”
And for this, as the Pope emphasized, “understanding, patience and dialogue with everyone are necessary.”
“I repeat: with everyone,” the pontiff drew attention to the last words.
Francis also said that Kazakhstan, which “represents a crossroads of important geopolitical nodes,” has an important role to play in conflict resolution.
The Pope spoke Italian, and simultaneous translation of his speech was carried out into Russian, Kazakh and English.
On August 1, 1975, in Helsinki, the capital of Finland, the heads of 35 states (NATO countries, Warsaw Pact countries, as well as neutral and non-aligned states), driven by the desire to overcome the split between East and West and showing the ability to achieve a multilateral consensus, signed the Helsinki Final Act 1975. By this document, they pledged to conduct a mutually beneficial dialogue.
