Politico: US urges allies in Europe to avoid harsh statements about Poland

U.S. officials have made a series of urgent phone calls to their NATO allies in Europe, asking them to refrain from making categorical statements about the causes of the missile incident in Poland, writes Politico edition.

They made a similar appeal to the administration of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who, shortly after the news of the state of emergency in Poland, said that “Russian missiles attacked Poland,” calling it a “significant escalation” that needs a response.

According to the newspaper, the differing assessments of what happened, given by Washington and Kyiv, became one of the first serious differences between the two countries, which acted in a coordinated manner over the past nine months. Such disagreements may become more if the conflict in Ukraine drags on, the publication believes.

With a similar appeal to the Ukrainian side addressed, in particular, National Security Adviser to the President of the United States Jake Sullivan, CNN reported on November 17. According to him, US President Joe Biden and Zelensky did not speak on Tuesday evening, despite requests from the Ukrainian leader to arrange a telephone conversation.

The incident with the fall of a rocket on the territory of Poland occurred on November 15, as a result of which two people were killed. On November 16, the Russian Ministry of Defense announced that specialists identified wreckage in photographs from a missile crash site in Poland as elements of the Ukrainian S-300 missile system. The department emphasized that all statements about the fall of supposedly Russian missiles on the territory of Poland are “a deliberate provocation in order to escalate the situation.”

Later, the White House released a statement saying that Washington adheres to preliminary version, according to which the missile that fell on the territory of Poland was launched by Ukrainian air defense. Polish President Andrzej Duda, in turn, admitted that there is no evidence that the rocket that fell on Polish territory was fired by the Russian military. NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg admitted that a Ukrainian air defense missile had fallen. The Ukrainian side, in turn, insists on its non-involvement in the incident.
