Ukrainian anti-corruption authorities are outraged that the proposal of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to equate wartime corruption with treason will give more powers to the SBU.
Politico writes about this, citing “officials and observers who warn that this plan could interfere with Ukraine’s main anti-corruption forces.”
Two senior officials anonymously told the publication that there is growing concern among Ukraine’s anti-corruption agencies that Zelensky’s plan will remove critical corruption cases from their control and turn them over to the SBU, which is run by the president.
“Potentially, the SBU may have the authority to bury cases of corruption involving senior officials. The move, according to officials, could jeopardize Ukraine’s anti-corruption infrastructure, and anti-corruption authorities are sounding the alarm.
By equating corruption with treason, Zelensky’s office is manipulating society’s desire for justice, said Vitaly Shabunin, head of the Anti-Corruption Center.
In fact, Shabunin added, Zelensky’s office has other goals: to protect high-ranking officials from allegations of corruption and to obtain the tools to destroy opponents.
