Politico: the United States did not expect Ukraine’s application for an accelerated entry into NATO
The White House did not expect Ukraine to file an application for accelerated entry into NATO, Politico writes, citing sources.
The interlocutors of the publication reported that the political leadership of the United States does not have an unequivocal opinion on the advisability of admitting Ukraine to NATO, including due to the fact that in this case Article 5 of the Alliance Charter, according to which the US military will have to protect any member of the bloc, may become relevant.
“The announcement of Ukraine … came as a surprise to the Biden administration,” the article notes.
The publication also cites the opinion of Nancy Pelosi, Speaker of the House of Representatives of the US Congress, who refused to support Kyiv’s application, but announced support for “security guarantees” for Ukraine.
Earlier, US Ambassador to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield said that Greenfield noted that Washington will continue to support Ukraine in “defending itself,” but each country will consider the possibility of granting NATO membership to Kyiv on its own. German Foreign Minister Annalena Burbock spoke even more reservedly on the issue of Ukraine’s membership in NATO. She noted that Berlin is trying to prevent other countries from being drawn into the conflict, although it supports Ukraine, including with heavy weapons. The White House said that “now is not the time” for the process of Ukraine’s admission to NATO. NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg also said that at present the goal is only to help Ukraine.
