Politico: The West wants not “too belligerent” support for Ukraine from the next NATO Secretary General
Officials in the West believe that the next Secretary General of the North Atlantic Alliance should be a European who can cooperate with any administration in the United States and supports Kyiv, but not too belligerently. writes Politico.
According to the publication, citing officials, the next head of the Western military-political bloc NATO should be a European who can work closely with anyone in the White House. Also, the next head of the alliance should support the Ukrainian side, but not be “too belligerent” so as not to frighten countries that are afraid to provoke the Russian Federation, the journalists shared the details. Along with this, the candidate needs to enjoy authority (probably, it should be an ex-president or a former head of government) and be able to enlist the unanimous support of 31 capitals, especially Washington, the author of the publication informed.
The current Secretary General of NATO, Jens Stoltenberg, has been in office for almost 9 years. The last time the term of office of the current head of the North Atlantic Alliance was extended in March 2022 until the end of September 2023. Earlier, the media reported that the association in October could be headed by the President of the European Commission (EC), Ursula von der Leyen, whose powers expire only in 2024.
The article refers to the fact that in Western circles there is an opinion that Stoltenberg may be asked to stay in his post for some more time. “If Stoltenberg stays until next summer, Ursula von der Leyen’s candidacy will look logical,” a senior European diplomat told Politico on condition of anonymity.
The Western military-political bloc of NATO does not hold official elections for the Secretary General, the new leader is appointed on the basis of the consensus of the member states of the North Atlantic Alliance.
