The European Commission is ready this week to begin discussions with the EU countries on the development of the ninth package of sanctions against Russia. About it writes newspaper Politico, citing officials.
According to the publication, the EC made such a decision in order to come to a compromise with Poland on the price ceiling for Russian oil. It is specified that Warsaw demands to start discussing a new round of sanctions against the Russian Federation along with the establishment of a ceiling price for energy resources.
Last week, talks on a price cap on Russian oil stalled, wrote Bloomberg agency. The EC proposed a ceiling of $65 per barrel, but the Baltic countries and Poland disagreed with this figure, considering the limit too lenient. According to Politico, Warsaw is pushing for a cap price of $30 a barrel. At the same time, Greece and Malta opposed the introduction of a ceiling below $70 per barrel.
The EU must decide on a price cap by next Monday, otherwise the tougher measures agreed in May, which include a ban on sea shipments of Russian crude oil from December 5, 2022 and oil products from February 5, 2023, will come into force.
European Commissioner for Energy Kadri Simson noted that the discussion will continue. However, the day before, on November 28, the EU countries again failed agree on a ceiling price for Russian oil, Reuters reported. The reason was the position of Poland, which insisted on a significant price reduction.
In the Kremlin called an initiative with a price ceiling “incomprehensible” and “inexplicable”. Press Secretary of the President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Peskov recalled the words of Russian President Vladimir Putin, who had previously stated that Russia would not supply gas and oil to countries that would join the price ceiling. By data Bloomberg, the Kremlin is already preparing a corresponding presidential decree.
