Politico: Hungary asked the EU to lift sanctions against Usmanov, Aven and Rashnikov

Hungary has asked the European Union to remove three Russian businessmen – Alisher Usmanov, Petr Aven and Viktor Rashnikov – from the EU sanctions list, transmits newspaper Politico, citing unnamed European diplomats and officials.
As the publication clarifies, the EU must resume its measures against individuals on whom sanctions have been imposed since the start of the special operation in Ukraine by September 15, or they will become invalid. Within the bloc, this extension was viewed as a technicality, as was the case with previous sanctions against Russia over Ukraine since 2014.
“Budapest asked to remove three Russian citizens from the EU sanctions list. The move infuriated other EU countries, who have bitter memories of how Hungarian leader Viktor Orban suspended the EU oil ban earlier this year.
Hungary has also asked the EU to extend the exemption to humanitarian aid. “This has raised fears among other EU countries that Budapest wants to create loopholes in EU sanctions at a time when the European Commission is trying to tighten rules,” one of the sources explains.
In July, The Wall Street Journal reported that four Russian businessmen were trying to challenge the imposition of EU sanctions against them through the courts. Roman Abramovich, Pyotr Aven, Alisher Usmanov and Mikhail Fridman said that Brussels “infringes on their rights” by the imposed sanctions restrictions.
