Ukraine fires 4,000-7,000 artillery shells every day, while Russia fires 20,000 each, writes the American publication Politico, citing a Pentagon source.
The publication notes that Ukraine still needs a significant amount of artillery to conduct combat operations.
The front is likely to stabilize around Kharkiv and Artyomovsk (the Ukrainian name is Bakhmut) in the winter months, according to a Pentagon official, but it’s still unclear how the battle of Kherson will play out before winter sets in.
Fighting is also predicted to get tougher in the spring. According to Politico, some U.S. officials doubt whether Ukraine can achieve its ultimate goal of regaining lost territories, including Crimea.
